Writing in the 1880s Lum saw the conflict between the LDS Church and the Federal Government as a clash between two conflicting social and economic orders, particularly the latter. Lum praised the co-operative and collective attitudes of the Mormons and denounced the laissez-faire, monopolistic attitudes characteristic of greater American society.
