"This book will show that the Mormons had a rich heritage in Indiana in the decade of the 1830s, but when the Mormon exodus from the Midwest began in 1846, the Mormons left behind their Eastern American roots. As the nineteenth century came to a close, failure to re-establish the faith in Indiana dampened the spirit of many missionaries, who had borne the incredible sacrifice and hardship. Eventually, however, the kingdom began to increase. Following World War II, it grew at an incredible speed.
"The number of converts, however, is only one way to define success. Another way is to examine cultural transformation or cultural change. The Latter-day Saint (LDS) or Mormon culture is very real . . . But there are subcultures within the United States which have been completely ignored by the Mormon hierarchy. Indiana is one of these. The history of Mormonism is Indiana is the story of the merging of two subcultures." [Preface] -
