Throughout his lifetime, Lot Smith (1830-92) served in the Mormon Battalion, mined gold in California, delivered assignments from President Abraham Lincoln on cavalry, served a term as a county sheriff, preached the Gospel in England, and managed cooperative sheep and cattle herds. He was revered as the leader of the Nauvoo Legion in the Utah War (1857) in a raid against the Federal Army's supply trains and livestock as they approached Utah. Smith's efforts during 1876-92 as a colonizer and leader in northern Arizona are most significant. Administrative and policy decisions and the church's failure to define roles and obligations complicated his assignments. He handled a jurisdictional dispute involving an Indian mission and Navajo animosity. Circumstances necessitated unremitting toil. Smith's spartan character allowed little concern for the comforts or welfare of his associates. His efforts to establish a social and spiritual union were a failure, but his business endeavors were a notable success against overwhelming odds.
