This brief article is a response to Thomas Blakely's article, 'The Swearing Elders: The First Generation of Mormon Intellectuals,' which appeared in Sunstone 10 (Number nine, 1985). The author clarifies his role in an episode portrayed by Blakely which concerned a famous meeting of Mormon Intellectuals (i.e., the 'Swearing Elders') in late 1954. On this occasion the topic of discussion was evolution and the publication of Joseph Fielding Smith's book Man: His Origin and Destiny. In the course of the meeting, the author states that he made some comments about the book which later led to his being 'invited' to meet with President Smith (he was then President of the Quorum of the Twelve) in his office. Poll gives an account of this meeting, as well as one held the same day with President David O. McKay, and relates some of his feelings about intellectual freedom in the Church.
