He argues that it is impossible for historians to either prove or disprove that Joseph Smith was a prophet. Neither can they prove or disprove the historicity of the Book of Mormon. They can only seek to understand. He recognizes the depth of the crisis of historical consciousness in Mormondom and does not try to minimize it but believes that historians can find means of pursuing their work while maintaining their integrity.
