Kramer feels that the tools of modern history are inadequate to properly write the history of Mormonism, because they fail to account of the Hand of God in the course of events. He arrives at this conclusion via a remarkably brief overview of all development of historiography--one in which virtually all historians become logical positivists. The remainder of the article is essentially a refutation of these positivists, which apparently includes most Mormon historians. Kramer argues further that effective Mormon history should be a straightforward narration of personal experience as it was perceived, without the 'added embellishment of sophisticated, anti-religious commentary meant to soften the impact of the situation.'
