On 6 May 1842, an unidentified person wounded the ex-governor of Missouri, Lilburn W. Boggs, as he sat in his home in Independence. Orrin P. Rockwell, was tried and acquitted. An examination of the local newspapers and Mormon literature indicates that the ends of justice were served by the acquittal of Rockwell. No evidence has been found to implicate the Mormon leaders Rockwell served.
