Four distinct ways of remembering Nauvoo's past are described. These historiographical perspectives include (1) reminiscences of the residents, (2) reports of visitors, (3) the honorific memorializations of celebrants, and (4) the interpretations of writers and historians. He describes the various viewpoints within each perspective, paying particular attention to the interpretive writings of novelists and historians.
