Johnson feels that the recent commercialization of the Mormon documents trade has had five negative effects. They are: (1) Dealers have increasingly obscured the provenance of documents in order to protect their sources; (2) Collections have been divided in the interest of greater profits; (3) While the commercialization of Mormon documents has had the effect of increasing the holdings of archives, often this has come at the expense of cutting budgets for research and writing; (4) The commercialization of Mormon documents has encouraged faking; (5) The commercialization of documents has had the direct result of creating an investment market, where owners are only concerned about the market value, and not the aesthetic worth of the documents.
