David O. McKay, president of the Mormon Church, made a public statement endorsing Richard Nixon for the Presidency of the United States in 1960. Some political observers believed that this statement had a decided effect in the voting behavior in areas heavily populated by Mormons. The author concluded that the endorsement had little effect on the membership and that other determinants such as party loyalty and attraction toward a candidate played a larger role.
