Hard evidence of previously rumored polygamy in Short Creek on the Arizona-Utah border began to surface when women applying for relief for their children listed the same man as their husband, some of the wives being only 13, 14, or 15 years of age. In 1953, Arizona arrested nearly every participating adult and made the children wards of the state; all were jailed or put in protective custody.
