This article is a review of the two controversial Hofmann documents, specifically Joseph Smith's 1825 letter to Josiah Stowell, and Martin Harris's 1830 letter to William W. Phelps. The author, Dean Jessee, discusses the attempts he made to authenticate the two letters, and provides some historical context for understanding them. His conclusions, although not conclusive, indicate that the documents are likely authentic. The article was written prior to the discovery that both documents were forgeries.
