Lorenzo Dow Young, a brother of Brigham Young, lived from 1807 to 1895. This is a narrative history, with little interpretation but a great deal of interesting chronology and factual information about Young. An introduction is provided by Robert J. Dwyer (pp. 21-24), which calls the biography 'uncritical, prolix, and naive.' Its virtue, however, was that it reflected the life of a very devout, faithful Mormon pioneer, written by a man who knew him well. The editor has provided a number of additional notes of interest. Young joined the Mormon Church in 1832 and was involved in the experiences of the Church in Kirtland, Missouri, Illinois, and Utah. He was a member of the original pioneer company to arrive in Utah in 1847. The biography is very sketchy, and its value is simply in the effort to capture faith and feelings of the pioneers. jba
