The index to the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants can be used as a key to understanding the interpretation of the revelations by the early Saints. The author took an interpretive approach in his study, citing examples of index entries and drawing conclusions based on quantitative and qualitative interpretations. The index shows that early Saints used the Doctrine and Covenants as a guidebook for Church government. Emphasis was also placed on 'situation-specific' directions, instructions for 'Godly living,' and doctrine concerning the millennial world. The index is reproduced at the end of the article.
