The way of life of the Western Ute Indians for a century (1776-1876) is described. The Utes didn't acquire horses until about 1800. Doing so changed their way of life and extended their range of residence. In the 19th century, they developed an equestrian lifestyle. In the winter, they migrated from the Great Basin to California where they at first engaged in trading and later in raiding for cattle and horses. Horses enabled them to hunt at great distances and transport greater quantities of game. They initially welcomed the settlement of Mormons on their lands because they made good trading partners. However by 1853, Waccara's Utes were faced with declining food sources and Mormon trade restrictions. They began raiding the Mormons to obtain cattle and in an effort to open up the bartering for Indian slaves. By the 1870s, the Utes had moved to a reservation in the Uinta Basin.
