Nineteenth-century southern and Mormon patriarchies are compared. Each society had unique aspects: slavery in the South and polygamy in the Mormon society. She looks at each society's rationales, religious bases, and their views regarding women. By the 1850s, these patriarchal societies were both perceived by many northerners as being a threat to the republic.
