This article defines the Marketplace of Ideas-- a place where ideas and viewpoints are freely promoted, distributed, accepted, and ignored-- and the House of Faith-- a space of comfort and consistency. Ideally, a person moves between and finds belonging in both places. However, distrust of the Marketplace of Ideas can in extreme cases lead to what the author calls the Prison of Conformity, which infringes on personal agency. The article mentions several historical instances of Prisons of Conformity, and warns that Brigham Young University may be sliding in that direction.
