"At the naming ceremony for my infant daughter, I called myself a "feminist" and was chastised by my family and other congregants. I mention my Mormon faith to feminist friends and am met with scoffs of 'Isn't that the church that defeated the Equal Rights Amendment?' Both camps, then, agree: 'Mormon feminist' is an oxymoron. In this article, Peggy Fletcher Stack overviews the role and perceived value of women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, explaining the seeming incompatibility of membership in the Church and feminism. However, she concludes that it is attributes inherent in her Church membership that make her a feminist while simultaneously making it difficult to be one.
