The treatment of homosexuality has a long history in the psychiatric and psychological professions. Beginning with Sigmund Freud at the turn of the 20th century, many clinicians since then have attempted to help homosexual clients. Psychoanalysis, psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy, a wide variety of behavioral therapies, rational psychotherapy, exaggeration therapy, fixed-role therapy, and a variety of group psychotherapy approaches have all been used to help homosexual clients.
