Sherlock reviews the arguments of such leading LDS thinkers as Joseph Fielding Smith, James E. Talmage, B.H. Roberts, Fredrick Pack, Nels Nelson, and W.H. Chamberlin on the question of evolution. He finds diversity and tension. 'The conservatives wanted some firm standard, the literal work of scripture, as a guide and test of loyalty and orthodoxy. Their critics saw too much truth in modern thought to accept the conclusions of those who would deny it. The struggle of these two outlooks has been the agony of every major religious system in the modern west. Mormonism may have been less vociferous in its struggle but the agonizing dilemma has been no less real.' (p. 59)
