Taylor tries to analyze the 'nature of the relationship between social and other discontents, conversion and emigration.' He recognizes that the motives for emigration cannot be fully known, but explores various possibilities, none of which are pictured as mutually exclusive. These include the religious appeal of Mormonism, the doctrine of the gathering, and the economic appeal. There is no correlation, he concludes, between emigration and general economic conditions in England. Nevertheless, after people were converted to Mormonism they were encouraged by their economic opportunities in America, and by the financial assistance available to them. Among other things, Taylor analyzes in detail where the emigrants came from, showing that they were predomiantly urban in origin.
