As an act of faith, Mormons rely on herbal cures rather than physicians. In the early 19th century Mormons implicitly mistrusted or explicitly opposed all medical practice except that of herbalists, but as medical science advanced, preconceptions changed. The church sanctioned orthodox medicine in 1882. Public acceptance has come more slowly. Official emphasis is still on proven methods, whether medical or herbal; the latter also need careful testing for safety.
