This article gives an overview of the era of baseball baptisms in the Church. It describes the intense pressure placed on missionaries and the punishment-reward systems implemented in order to encourage meeting baptism quotas. Due to this pressure, many missionaries resorted to bribing or misinforming potential converts, forging baptismal records, and baptizing children younger than eight years old. This led to mass excommunication in the following years as the Church attempted to release these converts from commitments they hadn't known they were making. The article also examines the response by general church leadership to the baseball baptism era. Some approved because of the incredible numerical success achieved; others heard of the specific tactics being employed and condemned the practice.
