In contemporary society science fiction has, in general, become today's popular-culture theology. Mormons are often seen in science-fiction (next to Catholics and Jews) but not as a source of interesting theology; rather, Mormons are popular as literary 'straight men.' Science fiction by Mormons draws very little on the resources of Mormon theology usually, only vague parallels exist. Most disturbing is Orson Scott Card's 'gratuitous graphic violence and disregard for women.'
