Very little is known about Brigham Young. The easily accessible evidences of his life and career portray him only as the leader, colonizer, and public figure. Knowledge is scant about how he formulated and directed policy, and from extant documents little can be gleaned about his private life and personality. The author feels that the attitude of the Mormon Church regarding full access to sources, which could lead to a better understanding of Young, is crippling. He hopes for a more relaxed policy toward the private resources of the Church but does not foresee any such move in the future.
