The author feels that history has dealt with Sarah Pratt somewhat unjustly. He feels that her radicalism was due primarily to her experiences with the institution of polygamy, and that had she lived in a monogamous world she would have been less controversial. Specifically, Van Wagoner points to her experience with Joseph Smith in Nauvoo as the turning point in her religious life. He claims that corroborative evidence supports her story that the Prophet made improper advances towards her, and that in Nauvoo, protecting the practice of plural marriage from public exposure was a greater virtue that telling the truth. By making public Joseph Smith's overtures and resisting what she considered to be collective infidelity, Sarah Pratt was judged a threat to the safety of the Church and considered to have committed apostasy.
