This article discusses why Joseph Smith was sealed to women who had living husbands. The author relates the experiences of Mary Elizabeth Lightner, Marinda Hyde, Sylvia Sessions, Prescendia Buell, and Zina D. H. Jacobs, and concludes that these women and others were likely persuaded by Joseph Smith that even though their marriages may have been 'productive of blessing and peace,' he, a prophet of God, could take them to the highest degree of the coveted celestial kingdom whereas their legal husband might not.
