Examines the views and attitudes of the key personnel in the Office of Indian Affairs toward Mormons during their stay at Winter Quarters (near Florence), Nebraska, 1846-48. Government officials were not hostile to the Mormons but were sincerely desirous of protecting the rights and interests of their charges, chiefly the Omaha Indians.
