The first part of the article gives the proceedings of the unveiling ceremony of the Mormon Battalion monument in front of the Utah State capitol, as well as giving details regarding the monument itself. Following that introductory section, Wells takes it as his purpose to show that the manner and method of raising the Battalion was just as heroic and patriotic as what the Battalion accomplished. He quotes from Wilford Woodruff's journal to give the background of the call. In addition, he mentions Thomas Kane's role quite prominently, especially in the second installment.
