This essay describes the accidental death of the author's great-grandmother, Rachel Hannah Davis Thatcher. She compares and contrasts the way her own grandfather told the story of the accident and the way the death was reported in a newspaper of the time. In addition, Ulrich shares other stories of her ancestors and concludes that 'sometimes, in the thicket of the past, documents give meaning to memory.'
