This essay describes the attitudes of explorers John Wesley Powell and John Muir toward Utah, Mormons and Mormon country. While many travelers of the second half of the nineteenth century were unenthusiastic in response to Utah's conditions, Powell and Muir both had positive reactions to the Great Basin and its people.
