Pamphleteering offers 'an index and a reservoir, as yet untapped, for the study of the intellectual history of the early Latter-day Saint movement.' (p. 36) Whittaker provides a broad summary outline of LDS polemical literature, citing illustrative examples. The author sees the conclusion of the first phase of LDS pamphleteering to end with the late 1850s, the result of 'growing [church] debts, the overabundance of products from the Mormon press, the Utah War, and the death of Parley P. Pratt.' No new products were to be issued until the death of Brigham Young in 1877. This first period marked the gradual transition from individual works to institutional products, marking the church's routinization.
