Delineates Algernon Sydney Paddock's service on the Utah Commission. For Paddock (1830-97) these five years in Utah provided an opportunity to remain in public life after not gaining reelection to the Senate, as well as a chance to participate in the anti-polygamy campaign against the Mormons. For the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, these years represented the arrival of a carpetbag federal commission, another attempt by Washington to coerce them to change what they believed to be a divinely inspired way of life.
