Utah had the makings of a radical tradition already in the 1870s. A group of LDS dissidents developed a version of 19th century spiritualism and challenged Mormonism by setting up a rival church organization, 'the first successful anti-LDS newspaper, a seminal historical survey of Mormonism, and an unprecedented public forum that featured a stream of internationally renowned radical itinerants. The hothouse roots of Utah spiritualism failed to sustain a permanent growth; yet in passing, the movement added an interesting and untold chapter to Utah's intellectual history.'
