Quinn examines a document which appears to show that Joseph Smith ordained or in some other way designated several people to succeed him, but also that he intended that his son Joseph Smith III one day become president of the LDS Church. Beyond that, however, Joseph Smith introduced the Church in Nauvoo to various secret doctrines and practices, including polygamy. The Quorum of the Twelve perpetuated those practices in the 'Utah' Church, while Joseph Smith's son perpetuated the public practices in the RLDS Church.
