Shipps argues in her essay that as Americans who do not belong to the Church increasingly mirror LDS behavior, previously distinct Mormon signifiers will become blurred. Large families, dietary restrictions, and several other factors which previously separated Latter-day Saints from their neighbors are now harder to view as cultural separators. Shipps concludes that as many of those LDS signifiers lose their identifying quality and as temple construction continues at an unprecedented rate, the temple ritual and a member's current temple recommend will become a greater indication of distinction both between Mormons and non-Mormons and also within the LDS community.
