Ute Indian chief Wakara first met the Mormons in 1848. Until 1852, he worked with Brigham Young and the Mormons in a peaceful manner. Although 'both angered by Mormon encroachment and attracted to Mormon culture,' he permitted the Mormons to establish settlements on land that he considered his by tradition.
