History has roundly and uniformly condemned half of the first Mormon missionaries to Hawaii for leaving that field of labor only ten weeks after arriving in the islands. It is the contention of this writer that history has dealt with these departing missionaries over-harshly. Lead and supported in their several decisions to leave Hawaii by the first mission president, Hiram Clark, four others took their leave of the Hawaiian Mission. These included Thomas Whittle, Thomas Morris, John Dixon, and Hiram Blackwell. Each was discouraged over the lack of immediate success and, from their perspective, faced insurmountable barriers to future progress. This paper attempts to provide a more balanced analysis of the first LDS Hawaiian mission. Previous historical accounts of the beginnings of the Hawaiian Mission have overlooked the temporary nature of the initial callings, interpersonal conflict, generational difficulties, etc. Hiram Clark, a veteran missionary, was dismissed from the mission in disgrace because of sexual improprieties and a few years later committed suicide in Southern California.
