Although initially popular, American religious revivals attracted critics and a counter-movement. The author characterizes Mormonism as an outgrowth and reaction to (one of five) Methodist camp meetings excesses (p. 91-92). He notes that Joseph Smith's religious questions were motivated by his attendance at revival meetings. He refers to Joseph Smith as a Methodist renegade.
