Christian missionaries in Hawaii taught that the traditional Hawaiian hula dance was vulgar and obscene. Beginning in 1919, influential Hawaiians began to bring the hula back to public acceptance and appreciation. Within twenty years hula performances were a staple in Hawaiian entertainment in the islands and the U.S. mainland. George Mossman, a Mormon, popularized the hula at his family-operated Lalani Hawaiian Village, a Honolulu tourist mecca. His daughter, Pualani Mossman, was a popular hula dancer in New York City nightclubs.
