New Portage, a little community near Norton Township, was considered as a 'secondary center of temporary gathering in Ohio' in 1834 due to violence in Missouri and increased growth. Zion's Camp was organized at New Portage, and the community later 'grew into one of the larger groups of Saints in Ohio.' (p. 84) Many of the Saints traveled through the area on their way from Kirtland to Missouri in 1838.
