The history of pari-mutuel horse race betting in Utah, legislatively sanctioned between 1925 and 1927, is chronicled. The minor role played by the Church, not in lobbying efforts, but in muted efforts to influence public sentiment through its newspaper is discussed. In fact, the appointment of Brigham F. Grant, then general manager of the Deseret News, as racing commissioner played a part in its initial legislative passage.
