Replies that the distinction between internal and external was based on models that assume that organizations act within environments which they seek to control or conform to. Furthermore, Mauss quotes the authors out of context in order to accuse them of using inadequte evidence for claims they never made. While Mauss argues for internal change as the cause of the granting of Mormon priesthood to Negroes, White and White are more concerned with the interplay of external and internal factors.
