Emma Smith, wife of Joseph Smith, made the first collection of Mormon hymns. Some were taken from Protestant hymnals, and some were written by early Mormons including many by William Wines Phelps and Eliza R. Snow. Hymns first appeared in the Mormon journals but were collected and published in a hymnal in 1835. Subjects of these hymns included persecution, missions, revelations, the apocalypse, baptism, and communion.
