This brief article announced the acquisition by Steven F. Christensen of the Martin Harris to William W. Phelps letter, dated October 23, 1830. Several issues are raised in connection with the new doucment. For example, Christensen declined to make the contents of the letter public, on the grounds that he had not had the opportunity to have professional tests performed on the document, thus raising possibility that the letter was not what it claimed to be. Jerald and Sandra Tanner are also quoted on this point, stating that the letter, if authentic, would prove to be one of the greatest evidences against the Book of Mormon. The Tanners, however, expressed doubt about the authenticity of the letter. The article goes on to quote sections of the letter published in the Salt Lake newspapers concerning the so-called 'white salamander' passage, and to speculate on its meaning.
