In the early years of the Church, Benjamin Winchester (1817-1901) was an enthusiastic and devoted missionary, gifted writer, and energetic leader. He joined the Church in 1833 when he was fifteen, went on the march of Zion's Camp, attended the School of the Prophets, and was appointed to the First Quorum of Seventies. Following a mission in the East, Winchester became the presiding elder of the Philadelphia Branch in 1840. He supported himself by writing and publishing. During his tenure in Philadelphia, the branch was wracked by much conflict and dissension. In 1843, he faced a Church trial and was recalled to Nauvoo. After Joseph Smith's death, Winchester returned to Pennsylvania where he began public attacks on the Twelve and the practice of plural marriage. For a short time, he allied himself with Sidney Rigdon. In 1845, he moved to Pittsburgh where he lived for nine years prior to moving to western Iowa where he was involved in local politics and owned a large brick yard.
