'Overland' herein refers to stagecoaching along the central route from Saint Joseph in Missouri, Leavenworth or Atchison in Kansas, via Salt Lake City, Utah, to California's Placerville or Folsom. Middle West business needs, growing Mormon settlements in Utah, and new gold discoveries in Colorado and Nevada necessitated and brought the forging of the last link of the transcontinental transportation chain. Richard Burton made the passage in 1860 collecting material for his forthcoming THE CITY OF THE SAINTS.
