The author tells the story of Daniel H. Wells, also known as Squire Wells, of Nauvoo. Joseph Smith said farewell to him on the day he gave himself up in Carthage. Wells was a non-Mormon judge in Nauvoo who was well acquainted with the Church. He was baptized in 1846 and came west with the Saints, leaving his wife and son. He was active in Utah as Brigham Young's counselor, as a soldier, and as a statesman.
