William Chandless was a British traveler who visited Salt Lake City and other Mormon settlements in Utah in 1856. His book, A VISIT TO SALT LAKE; BEING A JOURNEY ACROSS THE PLAINS AND A RESIDENCE IN THE MORMON SETTLEMENTS AT UTAH, was published in England in 1857. This article briefly describes Chandless's visit to America and the Great Basin, and reviews what he had to say about the Mormons. His views were generally positive, concise, and well-written. He described culture in Salt Lake City, the unity of church and state, the barter economy of the time, and some aspects of Mormonism. He did not label Mormonism as anti-Christian, as did some other travelers. He also commented in some detail on polygamy.
