In an effort to reconstruct the world of early Mormon thought, the entries in three small reference guides to the Book of Mormon are analyzed. The rationale is that the act of interpretation involved in preparing these reference works, i.e., the manner in which entries are worded, the choices made in including and excluding references, etc., reveal something about how the Saints viewed the theological and cultural landscape around them and shed light on matters uniquely Mormon. This analysis also sheds light on how the Saints in the 1830s and 1840s might have understood the Book of Mormon.
